People are freaking out over Nicki Minaj’s lyric video for her new single, Only. The hip-hop song featuring Chris Brown, Drake and Lil Wayne is accompanied with a series of black and red scenes that resemble the Nazi regime. Naturally, people have slammed the “offensive” video, deeming Nicki “anti-semitic”.
The self-claiming ‘Queen of Rap’ is portrayed as a leader running an army who look a lot like SS officers. The officers wear red arm bands baring the Young Money symbol which suspiciously look like the Swastika bands the Nazis wore during World War II.
There’s more. It appears Nicki’s “throne” is set in a scene that awfully resembles Nuremberg parade ground.
The excessive use of Nazi imagery and symbolism basically comes down to one thing. Nicki Minaj wants to be depicted as a dictator. Despite the criticism and hate she receives from the media, she still sees herself as a leader who is still ruling the music industry. Drake is Jewish, so we won’t go as far as to say Nicki is “anti-semitic”. Using Nazi references to interpret this, however, is debateable and distasteful.
Metaphor or not, this was a bad move, Nicki…
